Apple has reached a pivotal stage in the development of its camera-equipped AirPods, with prototypes now in the Design Validation Testing phase, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported on Thursday. The devices feature a near-final design and are being actively evaluated, marking the closest the long-rumored product has come to reality.

What the Cameras Will Do

The upcoming AirPods are expected to resemble the current AirPods Pro 3 and will feature infrared cameras on each earbud. Unlike traditional cameras, these will not capture photos or video for storage. Instead, they will function as environmental sensors that feed contextual data to Siri, allowing users to ask AI-powered questions about their surroundings. For instance, a user could ask Siri to suggest a recipe based on ingredients visible in their refrigerator.

Earlier speculation about in-air gesture controls has been ruled out. Gurman said in a recent social media post that he does not believe the technology exists to reliably support hand gestures with a single camera and no neural band. The cameras will instead enhance Apple’s Visual Intelligence feature, working with a connected iPhone to provide low-resolution environmental context to the AI assistant.

Timeline Uncertain as Siri Delays Persist

DVT is the second-to-last stage before mass production, typically lasting three to six months. Following DVT, Apple moves to Production Validation Testing, which historically takes two to four months for AirPods, with full production beginning roughly two months before launch.

Despite the hardware progress, a 2026 release appears unlikely. Apple’s next-generation Siri — which the camera AirPods depend on — has been plagued by delays. The AI assistant overhaul was originally planned for early 2026 but has been pushed back due to internal testing problems including sluggishness and failure to process queries. Apple recently settled a $250 million class action lawsuit over its delayed Siri features, with the company acknowledging the AI capabilities promoted during the iPhone 16 launch were not delivered on schedule.

Apple executives have indicated that the revamped Siri is expected to debut with iOS 27 at WWDC in June. The camera AirPods, potentially branded “AirPods Ultra” and priced above the current $249 AirPods Pro 3, may ultimately launch in 2027 — but the hardware, at least, is closer than ever.
